Data Privacy Day - January 28, 2010

Data Privacy Day is an internationally recognized day to highlight the importance of protecting personal information. The 4th International Data Privacy Day will be celebrated on Thursday, January 28, with events held in major centers across Canada in an effort to raise awareness and generate discussion about data privacy and access rights and responsibilities.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) has partnered with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, College of the North Atlantic, and the local branches of the Canadian Bar Association and Canadian Association of Professional Access and Privacy Administrators to host events within this province. These include:

  • Presentations on privacy, social networking, and personal information protection legislation given in Happy Valley-Goose Bay (January 25 at the College of the North Atlantic), Stephenville (January 26 at the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association, College of the North Atlantic, and Stephenville Middle School), and Corner Brook (January 27 at Grenfell College and the College of the North Atlantic).
  • Information fair on the protection of personal information held at the Avalon Mall (near the Gap) from 12:00 noon – 5:00 p.m. on January 28, 2010. The provincial Privacy Commissioner, Ed Ring, will be on hand between 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 pm.
  • Presentation on privacy in the workplace held at Memorial University on February 1, 2010.
