Save It Forward: Energy Efficiency Program Targets
Youth
A new program by the Provincial Government designed to increase awareness
and positive attitudes towards conserving and using energy more
efficiently among youth is now available to schools across Newfoundland
and Labrador. Save It Forward targets students from kindergarten
to Grade 12 and encourages them to develop their own ideas for more
efficient energy use.
"Save it Forward promotes conservation and wise energy use
among youth at a time when life-long habits begin to form," said the
Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources. "With this
program, we are encouraging the next generation to use energy more
efficiently which will ultimately reduce their carbon footprint and
protect the environment. By learning about energy efficiency and
conservation at a young age, students will adopt positive attitudes and
habits in their daily lives and pass them onto friends and family."
Save It Forward is a joint initiative between the Department of
Natural Resources and the Department of Education. Students are asked to
design an idea that promotes more efficient energy use and supports
conservation. Teachers are encouraged to submit a proposal to the
respective school district office by December 10, 2010. Representatives
from each department will review the submissions and award funding in
January 2011 which will permit selected classes to implement their
ideas. An outline of the Save It Forward Program and the
necessary application form is now available in all schools.
"Programs such as Save It Forward encourage our young people
to think outside the box to promote energy conservation and efficiency,
both within the classroom and at home," said the Honourable Darin King,
Minister of Education. "I encourage all students and teachers in
Newfoundland and Labrador to participate in this program. Students can
partake in an enjoyable learning opportunity and make a positive
contribution to our environment at the same time."
Save It Forward delivers on a commitment in the 2007 Energy Plan
to invest in the development of innovative educational programs that
engage young people in energy conservation and climate change. The
program complements other provincial initiatives which encourage more
efficient energy use and conservation such as the EnerGuide for
Houses Program and the Residential Energy Efficiency Program
(REEP) for low-income households, administered by Newfoundland and
Labrador Housing Corporation. Budget 2010: The Right Investments -
For Our Children and Our Future includes $100,000 to fund Save It
Forward.
