Mining Week Promotes Newfoundland and Labrador's Growing Industry

A celebration of the economic and employment opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador's mining industry is part of this year's provincial Mining Week which runs from October 31 to November 6. The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources, will be joined by industry partners at the Johnson GEO CENTRE in St. John's on Monday, November 1, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. to officially kick off the week.

"The mining industry makes a vital contribution to our provincial economy and to many residents and communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador where mining operations are centred," said Minister Dunderdale. "Our government wants to ensure that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador are aware of this industry's value and the benefits we derive from the development of our mineral resources. Provincial Mining Week allows us to come together with our partners to educate people about the industry, the career possibilities available and the range of products produced right here."

"Last year's provincial Mining Week was a great success and we envision the same response for 2010," said Bruce Dumville, President and Chief Executive Officer of Aurora Energy Resources Incorporated and Honourary Chair of provincial Mining Week. "Provincial Mining Week is a wonderful opportunity to increase greater public awareness and understanding of the industry. I encourage everyone to take part in the activities planned for the week and learn more about the contributions of the mining sector here in Newfoundland and Labrador."

Provincial Mining Week gets underway with the three-day Mining in Society Show at the Johnson GEO CENTRE. The show is presented by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, the Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber of Mineral Resources and the Department of Natural Resources. Visitors are encouraged to participate in a variety of interactive displays and exhibits that explore the mining cycle and its importance in everyday life. The show is open to the public and admission is free. In conjunction with the Mining in Society Show, a Women in Mining forum will also be held. The forum will feature female panelists currently employed with the industry.

Provincial Mining Week concludes with Mineral Resources Review, Eastern Canada's largest mineral industry conference and trade show, happening at the Delta St. John's Hotel and Conference Centre. Mineral Resources Review runs from November 4 to November 6 with approximately 600 delegates expected to attend. The conference will include a technical program with numerous presentations, an exhibitor's reception and the closing annual awards dinner and dance.

Other events taking place during the conference are the Prospectors' and Developers' Association of Canada Mining Matters workshops for educators which will present Earth Science educational resources that can be readily used in the classroom and a free public lecture by the department's Geological Survey, entitled The Lore and Allure of Diamonds.

"As the global demand for our minerals grows and prices rise, we believe this will sustain the long-term health of the province's mining industry," said George Ogilvie, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rambler Metals and Mining PLC and Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber of Mineral Resources. "This year's program for Mineral Resources Review will showcase the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for Newfoundland and Labrador and provide important networking opportunities for our local companies."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future continues to focus on increased exploration, promotion and investment of the province's resources. An investment of $235,000 will assist with the development of Newfoundland and Labrador's first-ever provincial Minerals Strategy.
