National Forest Week Poster Contest
Open to Grade 5 Students
Grade 5 students in Newfoundland and
Labrador are once again invited to participate in the Department of
Natural Resources' National Forest Week province-wide poster contest.
"We believe it is important for us to take this opportunity each year to
raise awareness about the value of the forest industry and the
importance of sustainable forest management," said the Honourable Kathy
Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for
the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "Grade 5 students are our target
group for this contest as a result of their curriculum and I always look
forward to the thoughtful entries we receive. Their artwork illustrates
the enjoyment they get from our forests."
National Forest Week celebrates the important role the forest plays in
society, as well as the many economic, cultural and recreational
benefits enjoyed by Canadians. National Forest Week this year is
September 19-25.
Posters should be completed on 11 x 17 paper and should not be folded.
All entries must include the student's name, as well as the school's
name and contact information. Entries must be postmarked by Friday June
25, 2010. For complete details and contact information, please visit
www.gov.nl.ca/nr.
Judging will be done by the National
Forest Week Committee and will be based on originality, creativity and
adherence to the topic, Forests: A Breath of Life.
The contest will have three regional winners, one each from the eastern,
western and Labrador regions of the province. Each regional winner will
receive an IPOD and a framed copy of their poster. An overall provincial
winner will be selected to receive a Nintendo Wii game system and a
field trip for his/her class during National Forest Week. The winner's
school will also receive a new computer system and 12 contest entries
will be featured in the 2011 National Forestry Week calendar.
Entries can be submitted to District Forestry Offices or mailed to:
