Provincial
Government Provides Funding for
Fire Protection Equipment in Bellevue
A Provincial Government
investment of $51,226 will provide enhanced firefighter
protection for four fire departments in the District of
Bellevue. The Honourable Kevin OBrien, Minister of Municipal
Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency
Services, today announced funding for the Harbour Mille,
Normans Cove, Old Shop, and Southern Harbour fire departments.
We are humbled by the commitment
of the women and men of our provinces fire service and are
pleased to be able to provide such valuable support, noted
Minister OBrien. Our government recognizes the dedication of
our firefighters. This funding further indicates how the safety
of our communities and our volunteers is a top priority.
The funding, which will help
acquire items such as new bunker suits, self-contained breathing
apparatus, and a portable pump, is administered by Fire and
Emergency Services Newfoundland and Labrador.
I am pleased that these fire
departments from two towns and two local service districts will
receive funding to upgrade their fire fighting equipment, said
Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue. It is important that these
wonderful volunteers are properly equipped when they have to
respond to an emergency.
Budget 2010: The Right
Investments For Our Children and Our Future doubled the
investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1
million, while also increasing expenditures on fire fighting
vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for Bellevue will
be shared between the Provincial Government and the respective
communities under the 90/10 cost shared ratio established
through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project
cost of close to $60,000.
