Embree Fire Department Receives Over $30,000 in Funding

The Provincial Government is providing $30,991 in funding for a fire department in Lewisporte district. The Honourable Kevin OBrien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced funding for the Embree Fire Department for the purchase of personal protective equipment.

"We are proud to support the men and women who have the strength and courage to protect our communities," said Minister OBrien. "Fire fighters provide an indispensable service to the areas they serve and the Provincial Government remains committed to their success."

The funding, which provides for new bunker suits, air cylinders and self-contained breathing apparatus, is administered through Fire and Emergency Services Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Volunteer fire fighters carry out a crucial role in our communities," said Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte. "I am very pleased that the Embree Fire Department is receiving the necessary funding to enable them to upgrade their equipment needs."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for Lewisporte district will be shared between the Provincial Government and the community of Embree under the 90/10 cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of over $36,000.
