Fire Departments in Grand Bank Receive Over $42,000 in Equipment Funding

The Provincial Government is providing $42,279 in funding to five fire departments in Grand Bank district.The Honourable Kevin O�Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced funding for Fortune, Grand Bank, Lawn, Point May and St. Lawrence fire departments.

"Protective equipment is important for fire fighters to protect both themselves and residents in emergency situations," said Minister O�Brien. "The Provincial Government is pleased to provide increased funding to this essential municipal service, in addition to a significant investment in the Fire and Emergency Services Training School, to provide fire fighters and municipal officials with the knowledge and equipment needed to ensure a focus on safety."

The funding, which provides for equipment such as a portable pump, bunker suits, face-pieces, air cylinders and compass kits, is administered through Fire and Emergency Services � Newfoundland and Labrador.

"I am delighted with our government�s continued commitment to volunteer fire fighters, to ensure they have the necessary equipment to respond in emergency situations," said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education and MHA for Grand Bank. "I recognize the valuable contribution of community volunteer fire departments. We are thankful for their continued dedication in providing safe and secure communities."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments � For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for Grand Bank district will be shared between the Provincial Government and the respective communities under the 90/10 cost shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of nearly $50,000.
