More than $80,000 in Funding for Fire Protection Equipment in St. Barbe

The Provincial Government is providing $80,960 in funding for five fire departments in the District of St. Barbe. The Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced funding for Cow Head, Daniel's Harbour, Parsons Pond, Rocky Harbour and Trout River fire departments.

"Our government continues to place a high priority on the personal safety of our fire fighters and their ability to protect the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister O'Brien. "Volunteers, like members of our fire departments, are the backbone of any community initiative and we are delighted to provide funds for such integral equipment."

The funding, which will provide for a portable pump, air cylinders, self-contained breathing apparatus and bunker suits, is administered by Fire and Emergency Services — Newfoundland and Labrador.

"This is fantastic news for the volunteer fire fighters of the area," said Wallace Young, MHA for St. Barbe. "The safety and well-being of these individuals is of utmost importance, and this investment will help to provide equipment that will enhance their protection."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for St. Barbe district will be shared between the Provincial Government and the respective communities under the 90/10 cost shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of more than $94,000.
