Harbour Main Fire Department Benefits from Equipment Funding

The Provincial Government is providing $18,266 in funding for fire protection equipment for the Harbour Main Fire Department. The Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced the funding for such items as bunker suits, helmets and self-contained breathing apparatus.

"The volunteer fire service numbers more than 6,000 members in Newfoundland and Labrador and provides a valuable service to our communities," said Minister O'Brien. "We are pleased to be able to reinforce their commitment to such an essential municipal service. This funding, coupled with appropriate training, will help to keep safety top of mind in emergency situations."

The funding, which provides for fire fighting equipment with a focus on personal protection, is administered through Fire and Emergency Services — Newfoundland and Labrador.

"This funding will provide invaluable equipment that will keep our volunteer fire fighters safe as they help protect our communities," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works and MHA for Harbour Main. "It is a much-needed investment in those who give their time in such a generous way, and it is a great benefit to the people they serve in this area."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for Harbour Main will be shared between the Provincial Government and the municipality under the 90/10 cost shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of over to $21,000.
