Cape St. Francis Benefits from Fire Equipment Funding

The Provincial Government is providing $11,905 in funding for the Pouch Cove Fire Department in the District of Cape St. Francis. The funding will provide for new bunker suits to help fire fighters improve their level of protection.

"Through increased funding and a generous cost share program, our government continues to support the efforts of our women and men in the fire service," said the Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. "Bunker suits are an integral piece of fire protection equipment. Coupled with a good training program, the modernization of equipment helps to ensure our volunteers are provided with the tools they need to remain as safe as possible safely following emergency situations."

Kevin Parsons, MHA for Cape St. Francis, said today's funding announcement encourages the commitment of the many members of the Pouch Cove fire service.

"This is wonderful news for our volunteer firefighters, who provide an invaluable service to the residents of Pouch Cove," said Mr. Parsons. "The new bunker suits will help to enhance the safety of these individuals, while they serve to protect their community."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for Cape St. Francis will be shared between the Provincial Government and the respective communities under the 90/10 cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of close to $14,000.
