Fire Departments in Trinity — Bay de Verde Receive Equipment Funding

The Provincial Government is providing $36,570 in funding for a trio of fire departments in the District of Trinity — Bay de Verde. The Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced funding for Heart's Content, Heart's Delight-Islington, and New Perlican fire departments.

"Firefighting safety is a priority for our government and assisting these departments is one of the ways we're helping the fire service protect residents in emergency situations," said Minister O'Brien. "These funds will go towards bunker suits, self-contained breathing apparatus and a new portable pump to help modernize these municipal resources."

The funding, which provides for fire fighting equipment with a focus on personal protection, is administered through Fire and Emergency Services — Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Today's announcement certainly reinforces our government's commitment to a dedicated volunteer workforce," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity — Bay de Verde. "Funding for new equipment is welcome news for our volunteer fire fighters and the residents whom they protect."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for Trinity — Bay de Verde will be shared between the Provincial Government and the respective communities under the 90/10 cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of close to $43,000.
