An investment of $17,239 will provide enhanced
firefighter protection for two regional fire departments in Ferryland
and Fermeuse. The Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs
and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, announced the
funding today.
"Our government is pleased to partner with our
municipalities to assist in providing the members of our volunteer fire
service with the tools needed to protect the residents of Newfoundland
and Labrador" said Minister O'Brien. "This funding will not only help
firefighters protect themselves when faced with danger, but will also
assist in combating any blaze which may threaten the lives and property
of the citizens of their communities."
The funding, which provides for fire fighting
equipment with a focus on personal protection, is administered through
Fire and Emergency Services — Newfoundland and Labrador.
"Collectively, these fire brigades provide valuable
fire and emergency service from Brigus South to Cappahayden," said Keith
Hutching, MHA for Ferryland. "I am pleased to be part of a government
that continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to our volunteer
firefighters, especially in rural regions, by ensuring they are equipped
with the necessary equipment to respond when needed. I would also like
to recognize the efforts of the fire departments in working and
advocating for the much needed equipment announced by Minister O'Brien."
Budget 2010:
The Right Investments — For Our
Children and Our Future
doubled the investment in fire fighting
equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing
expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million.
Funding for Fermeuse and Ferryland fire departments will be shared
between the Provincial Government and the respective communities under
the 90/10 cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital
Works Program, for a total project cost of more than $20,000.
