Communities to Benefit from $10 Million Investment in
Municipal Infrastructure
To support the long-term sustainability of communities and strengthen
municipal services, the Provincial Government will invest approximately
$10 million to support 32 new municipal infrastructure initiatives.
"Communities throughout the province will experience more secure,
efficient municipal services as a result of these municipal
infrastructure improvements," said the Honourable Dianne Whalen,
Minister of Municipal Affairs. "We are strategically investing in a
variety of capital projects, with a main focus on water and wastewater
improvements, which are essential services critical to the health and
well-being of our communities."
In Budget 2010: The Right Investments - For Our Children and Our
Future, the Provincial Government committed $135.5 million
in
support of municipal infrastructure projects. With
federal and municipal contributions factored in, the total investment in
municipal infrastructure in 2010-11 is anticipated to be the largest in
history at approximately $225 million. The majority of spending
will complete projects announced under the various components of the
Building Canada Fund, and previously committed municipal capital works
initiatives.
"Our government will continue to work with municipalities to help
address infrastructure needs, make investments in the best interests of
residents, and continue on the path to ensure that municipalities have
access to reliable municipal services," said Minister Whalen.
The Provincial Government's infrastructure strategy is valued at more
than $5 billion over the next several years and includes investments in
municipalities, healthcare, education, justice, social housing,
transportation, and environment and conservation.
