In support of the Provincial Government's commitment
to promote strong, viable and sustainable communities,
the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Municipal
Affairs (Acting), today announced funding approval
totaling $469,371 in support of 10 municipal
infrastructure projects.
"Infrastructure investment and the delivery of
improved municipal services support the
long-term sustainability, growth and development of
communities throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador," said Minister Hedderson. "The 10 projects
announced today support a variety of projects including
roadwork, repairs to water infrastructure and equipment
replacement, all of which are important investments and
will have a positive impact on communities."
Communities receiving funding are Stephenville, St.
Lunaire-Griquet, Gambo, Happy Adventure, Makinsons,
Little Bay, Cormack, Trepassey, Shoe Cove, and Point of
Bay and are noted in the backgrounder below.
The Municipal Capital Works program fosters the
development of cost-shared projects in a wide range of
municipal infrastructure. Typical projects include water
and waste-water treatment, roads, recreational
facilities, fire equipment, and various community
initiatives.
"Funding provides opportunity for communities to
secure, develop and improve services for
their residents, deliver strong municipal services and
meet infrastructure needs," said Minister Hedderson. "We
are pleased to invest in communities throughout the
province and ensure that residents and visitors have
access to reliable services."
In Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation,
the Provincial Government made an unprecedented
multi-year commitment of a 69 per cent increase in
municipal capital works funding for fiscal years
2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. This commitment increased
the capital budget by $34.4 million annually, bringing
the total annual Provincial Government commitment to
$84.3 million.
The Provincial Government's
infrastructure strategy is valued at more than $4
billion over the next several years.
