Renovations Underway at
Women's Correctional Centre
The Williams Government is investing
approximately $1 million as it moves forward with major renovations to
the Newfoundland and Labrador Correctional Centre for Women located in
Clarenville to improve conditions for both inmates and staff. The
renovations are part of the Provincial Government's ongoing response to
the corrections review Decades of Darkness — Moving Towards the Light.
"The corrections review shed a much
needed light on corrections in this province and has helped the Williams
Government make the necessary improvements to facilities and staffing
throughout the province," said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of
Justice and Attorney General. "I am extremely pleased with the
implementation of the recommendations contained within the report, which
was received by our government in December 2008. The expansion of the
Women's Correctional Centre in Clarenville is just another example of
the commitment our government has shown towards providing safe and
secure facilities for inmates."
The expansion project, awarded to Eastern
Contracting of Mount Pearl, will include construction of new doctors'
offices, interview rooms, classification offices and washroom
facilities, which will have a direct impact on improving day-to-day
conditions for inmates. The newly constructed areas will open up
existing space that will be redesigned for improved community group and
inmate programming. The renovations will also include the construction
of two cells available for inmates with psychiatric needs or security
issues to protect their safety and the safety of other inmates and
correctional officers. The improvements to the facility will also
include the installation of a sprinkler system throughout the building.
"These improvements will greatly enhance
the quality of life of the inmates in the Women's Correctional Centre in
Clarenville," said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Trinity North MHA. "I
too, am delighted that our government is making such progress with the
recommendations that were outlined in the corrections review."
The renovations are expected to be
completed by early spring 2011.
