New Provincial High Sheriff Appointed
The Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and
Attorney General today announced the appointment of Ernest Boone, Q.C.,
to the position of High Sheriff in Newfoundland and Labrador.
"The services provided by the Office of the High
Sheriff are an essential component for the effective administration of
justice in both the Supreme and Provincial Courts in Newfoundland and
Labrador," said Minister Collins. "I am confident that Mr. Boone will
continue to bring his wealth of experience and background in the legal
field to the office. I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr.
Boone as High Sheriff, a position he has held in an acting capacity for
the past several months."
The Office of the High Sheriff is primarily
responsible for providing court security but also provides other
essential administrative services to the Supreme and Provincial Courts.
In addition to court security, the Office of the High Sheriff
administers the judgment enforcement process and the jury system, as
well as executes orders and decisions of the courts.
Minister Collins also thanked former High Sheriff John
McDonald for his years of service and wished him success in his future
endeavors.
The appointment of Mr. Boone is effective immediately.

BACKGROUNDER
Biography
Ernest Boone
, Q.C., was born
in Clarke's Beach on December 1, 1942. He moved with his family to St.
John's in 1943 when his father joined the St. John's Fire Department.
Raised and educated in St. John's, Mr. Boone graduated from Prince of
Wales Collegiate in 1964. After high school, he attended Memorial
University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968. He
subsequently served 27 years in the Canadian Forces and four years with
the federal Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. He
graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Education degree
in 1975 and received a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of
Windsor in 1981. After a 27 year career with the Canadian Forces in
which he served in Europe and throughout Canada, Mr. Boone resigned his
commission with the Canadian Forces in 1995 and returned to Newfoundland
and Labrador where he has been engaged in the full-time practice of law
in St. John's for the past 15 years. Mr. Boone was admitted to the Bar
of the Supreme Court of Ontario and to membership in the Law Society of
Upper Canada in 1983. He practiced law for a brief period in the City of
Ottawa before resuming his military career in 1986. Mr. Boone was
admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador
and to membership in the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador in
1994. He is currently a member in good standing of both law societies.
Mr. Boone is married to the former Linda Easton of St. John's and they
have one son, Sean.
