Chief Judge of Provincial Court Appointed
The Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice
and Attorney General, today announced the appointment of Robert Hyslop as
Associate Chief Judge of Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.
"Judge Hyslop has had an extensive career in the legal profession, including the
last 21 years as a judge of Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador," said
Minister Collins. "While serving as a judge he has contributed greatly to the
administration of justice in our province and I am confident his experiences
will prove invaluable as he serves as Associate Chief Judge."
The Associate Chief Judge performs duties assigned by the Chief Judge of
Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. As well, when the Chief Judge is
unable to perform his or her duties or the position becomes vacant, the
Associate Chief Judge performs these duties.
"Judge Hyslop has served in all judicial centres in Newfoundland and Labrador
and has a strong understanding of the operations of these regions," said
Minister Collins. "I offer him my congratulations on this appointment and wish
him well in this important role for Provincial Court."
Judge Hyslop is a graduate of the University of King's College with a bachelor
of arts, Dalhousie University with a bachelor of law and has also received a
master of laws (Merit) in criminology and criminal justice from the University
of London, England. He has worked with the Department of Justice, appeared at
every level of court in Canada and served as a member of the Canadian delegation
to the sixth United Nations Congress of the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of
Offenders in Venezuela. Judge Hyslop was appointed Queen's counsel in 1988 and
appointed as a judge of Provincial Court in 1989.
The appointment as Associate Chief Judge was effective March 31, 2010.
