Central Companies to Shed Excess and Go Lean
In an effort to eliminate excess and become
leaner, five companies from the province's Central Region are using a
$155,000 investment from the Provincial Government to collaborate with
the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters Association (CME) on a series of
lean manufacturing training programs.
"In today's business environment, knowledge
into how best to maximize productivity and eliminate waste, in the face
of sometimes volatile external market conditions, is at a premium," said
the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural
Development. "Companies that apply best practices in their operations
can ultimately better manage their budgets and competitiveness. These
five companies recognize that importance and are proactively training
staff to improve their operational efficiencies."
Participating companies are Blanchard's
Woodworking, New Wood Manufacturing, Seabreeze Boats, Sutreen Hardwoods,
and Versatile Stones. Delivered by CME, more than 50 company employees
will receive practical training to eliminate unproductive processing
activities, limit work-in-progress and finished goods inventories, and
optimize work flow through the manufacturing plant.
Through the training, participants will
acquire a greater understanding of workplace organization and safety.
Additionally, the training will stress employee involvement in solving
real shop floor problems, engage employees in rapid continuous
improvement projects, and eliminate waste in the workplace.
"We are pleased to be able to work with these
firms to help them achieve their goals," said David Haire, CME's Vice
President of Lean Manufacturing and Best Practices. "Business success in
today's global economy depends on focusing on customer value and the
contribution that employees make in creating that value. This
program will give employees and the companies the skills they need to
help drive bottom line results."
The training programs build upon the
principles of improved productivity and reduced waste that were
highlighted in the Provincial Government's Manufactured Insights
sessions.
Launched in December 2007 by the Department of
Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, in co-operation with CME and
the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Business Network, the Manufacturing
Insights sessions provide participants with information into how to
reduce waste and increase profitability.
In fall 2010, sessions are scheduled for St.
John's, Mount Pearl, Plum Point, Stephenville, Grand Bank, Corner Brook,
and Grand Falls-Windsor. They are open to all businesses. A full
schedule is provided in the backgrounder below.
"Over the years, Manufacturing Insights has
become increasingly popular with more than 600 participants attending 27
sessions in communities across the province," said Minister Skinner. "I
encourage companies and organizations to avail of these free sessions
that will certainly benefit and strengthen their operations."
