Triton-based Company Set to Market New Product

As part of introducing its new line of frozen products to the marketplace, Badger Bay Mussel Farms is receiving $25,000 from the Provincial Government to create convenient, export-friendly packaging.

"Badger Bay Mussel Farms has earned a reputation in markets across Canada and the United States for producing high-quality products," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "With support from the Provincial Government the company will introduce its new product in an easy to use package and make it attractive to consumers."

Badger Bay Mussel Farms new line of frozen products will include its Iceberg Select™ mussels prepared in different sauces such as garlic, marinara, and wine.

"Assistance from the Provincial Government will help Badger Bay Mussel Farms with developing new packaging for its new products and further our position in the North American marketplace," said Juan Roberts, President, Badger Bay Mussel Farms. "Having accessible programming in place to support local companies target new opportunities is extremely important in helping local industries experience success."

Since opening in 1988, the Triton-based company has emerged as the largest blue mussel farming operation in Newfoundland and Labrador. Badger Bay Mussel Farms has more than 700 hectres of mussel growing waters over six sites, with a production capacity of three million pounds of mussels annually.

"Badger Bay Mussel Farms has been successful in identifying opportunities and promoting its products to markets across Canada and the United States," said Ray Hunter, MHA, Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South. "Its current work continues that trend and further positions the company as a significant contributor to the region's economy."

This initiative was funded through the Business and Market Development Program, which, through Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future , has $1 million available for investment. Administered by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, the program provides new entrepreneurs and expanding small businesses with matching funding to help them acquire the necessary expertise to pursue new business ideas and markets.
