Media Advisory: Minister to Place First Battens

The Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, is participating in the Battening er' Out ceremony at the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador in Winterton tomorrow (Thursday, August 12). The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

At the ceremony, Minister Skinner will be accompanied by the Honourable Charlene Johnson, MHA, Trinity-Bay de Verde, in placing the first battens on the Indeavour, which is a replica of John Guy's boat that was used to explore Trinity Bay and make contact with the Beothuk. Battens are installed on the ship to shape its hull in advance of planking.

Opened in 1997 by the Town of Winterton, the museum incorporates boat collection and construction activities and exhibits that capture and interpret boat building in the province. It is currently involved with the construction of the Indeavour as part of this year's Cupids 400 celebrations.
