Eastport Manufacturer Adds Professional Support

With the objective of maximizing its productivity, Eastport-based Sutreen Hardwood and Mouldings Ltd. is acquiring professional expertise with support from the Provincial Government's Workplace Skills Enhancement Program.

"Undertaking initiatives to maximize productivity and building a strong workforce are significant in the course of a company's continued development," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "The Provincial Government's investment of $20,000 in Sutreen Hardwood and Mouldings will enable the company to take measures to achieve both, while increasing its ability to meet client demands and target new sales opportunities."

The investment will enable Sutreen Hardwood and Mouldings to engage a highly-skilled floor supervisor. The supervisor's experience will allow the company to develop strategies to improve work flow, as well as train new employees in a number of highly technical areas.

Support from the Provincial Government is enabling our company to gain a more skilled and steady workforce," said Mike Sinnicks, Owner, Sutreen Hardwood and Mouldings. "With the addition of a plant supervisor, we will gain greater control in getting our product line to the marketplace, enhancing the company's profitability and allowing for greater attention to be given to marketing and other initiatives."

Incorporated in 1997, the company manufactures cabinet doors, mouldings, stairs and flooring, along with other products, using precision controlled equipment to customize its high end wood products.

"Sutreen Hardwood and Mouldings is a tremendous asset to the Eastport Peninsula and surrounding area," said Sandy Collins, MHA, Terra Nova. With this funding they will be able to further improve on an already successful business by increasing productivity and allowing them to expand operations."

The Workplace Skills Enhancement Program helps small and medium-sized enterprises in strategic sectors acquire and up-skill employees to enhance productivity and global competitiveness. It is funded by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Market Agreement and the Strategic Training and Transition Fund.
