Holyrood Marina Undergoes Expansion
To better accommodate the
needs of recreational boaters visiting and berthing in
Conception Bay, the Holyrood Marina Park is undergoing
expansion with the assistance of a $146,000 investment
from the Provincial Government.
"Supporting the expansion
of the Holyrood Marina Park complements work underway at
other marinas across Newfoundland and Labrador," said
the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation,
Trade and Rural Development. "Collectively, marina
improvements in such communities as Lewisporte, Long
Cove, and Lower Trinity strengthen the province's
ability to attract recreational boaters and add to the
quality of their experiences. With increased numbers of
boaters to the province, there are new opportunities for
economic spin-offs in a variety of sectors including
accommodations, food and beverage, and service."
Led by the Holyrood
Marina Park Corporation, the expansion includes the
construction of 14 breakwater berths that will be
completed by the end of 2010. Additional work will
include the creation of 28 side-access floating docks,
breastwork on the marina's south side, and a new
pump-out station.
"This project will set
the stage for the complete redevelopment of the marina,"
said George Penney, Chair, Holyrood Marina Park
Corporation. "It is the goal of the Holyrood Marina Park
Corporation to provide a full-service marina for the
recreational boating community and provide a diversity
of recreational opportunities to the residents and
visitors to the Town of Holyrood. Working together with
our partners, we will finally realize the first of our
long-term goals."
Established as a
partnership in 2005 between the Town of Holyrood and
marina users, the Holyrood Marina Park Corporation is
mandated with improving the marina's operations to
better meet the needs of recreational boaters. The
marina is also home to the Terra Nova and Holyrood Yacht
Clubs and has more than 100 members.
"The Holyrood Marina has
long been an important economic contributor to Holyrood
and the surrounding municipalities," said the Honourable
Tom Hedderson, MHA, Harbour Main. "With infrastructure
improvements such as new breakwater berths and floating
docks it will continue to be an important economic
generator for many years to come."
This initiative was
funded through the Regional/Sectoral Diversification
Fund (RSDF), which through Budget 2009: Building on
Our Strong Foundation was increased to an $8 million
fund. Administered by the Department of Innovation,
Trade and Rural Development, the RSDF provides
non-repayable contributions to economic development
agencies for initiatives that address regional and
sectoral development and diversification.
