Provincial Government Celebrates
International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, recognized today, December 3, as United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

December 3 is designated by the United Nations as a time to celebrate and recognize the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities, said Minister Sullivan. The occasion is about promoting the contribution of persons with disabilities within our community. It is also about recognizing that a fully inclusive society benefits all residents of our province.

This year the United Nations theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities is Keeping the promise: Mainstreaming disability in the Millennium Development Goals towards 2015 and beyond, which aims to further ensure the full and effective participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of societal life and development.

As Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, I am proud to say that 2010 was a pinnacle year for our government in respect to enhancing inclusion, said Minister Sullivan. Through collaborations with the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities and the completion of a province-wide consultation to develop a Strategy for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, our government is forging ahead with its commitment to achieve inclusion. We will continue to engage and work with the community of people with disabilities, keeping in mind their well articulated motto nothing about us, without us.

The Provincial Advisory Council for Persons with Disabilities held their first meeting in 2010, and provincial consultations for the development of a Strategy for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities were held throughout the province from September 14 November 1. The consultation process saw over 500 people provide important and valuable input.

As the Provincial Government moves forward with the development of an inclusion strategy, the significant contribution made by the community of persons with disabilities, the Provincial Advisory Council and residents, will prove extremely important, said Minister Sullivan. As we celebrate December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I want to pass on my sincere appreciation to the hundreds of individuals, community groups and other stakeholders who have made a commitment to work with our government to enhance inclusion throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for the future.
