Diversity, Opportunity and Growth -
Contribution of Immigrant Professionals Highlighted
The Provincial Government is pleased to
release the third edition of Diversity ~ Opportunity and Growth,
Profiles of Immigrant Professionals in Newfoundland and Labrador.
This magazine highlights the significant contribution being made by 20
immigrant professionals who provide valuable services throughout the
province.
"These success stories will help to promote
the province as a destination of choice for prospective immigrants,"
said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour
and Employment. "The magazine and its contents complement our efforts to
increase the attraction and retention of immigrants to Newfoundland and
Labrador."
The provincial immigration strategy, launched
in March 2007, aims to triple the number of immigrants to 1,200-1,500
annually from the pre-strategy average of 450 per year. Already the
strategy is showing results as the total number of immigrants to the
province in 2008 and 2009 exceeded 600 each year.
Since the launch of the strategy, the
Provincial Government has nominated just over 1,000 individuals under
the Provincial Nominee Program. They come from 71 different countries
and have settled in 45 communities throughout the province.
"Immigrants bring new thinking, innovation,
creativity and specialized skill sets to directly benefit the local
economy and society," said Minister Sullivan. "The 20 individuals
featured in this magazine provide vital services in their respective
areas of expertise. Immigrants also bring their culture, food, music and
art, all of which enriches a shared experience for residents of our
province."
Diversity ~ Opportunity and Growth, Profiles
of Immigrant Professionals in Newfoundland and Labrador
is available
on the Provincial Government's immigration website at
www.nlimmigration.ca,
along with a number of video testimonials of individuals who have chosen
Newfoundland and Labrador as their home.
"I encourage everyone to read the magazine and
watch the videos and learn what immigrants say about Newfoundland and
Labrador," said Minister Sullivan. "No doubt it will renew a sense of
pride in our wonderful province of Newfoundland and Labrador."
