October 13, 2010Community Youth Network Celebrates
Grand Opening
The Provincial Government extended its Community Youth Network (CYN)
to another area of the province today with the grand opening of a new
chapter serving Clarenville and surrounding areas.
The new CYN is located at 26 Manitoba Drive, Clarenville, and was
created to provide services for youth living in or at risk of poverty.
These services are focused on decreasing barriers to education and
employment, and improving the overall quality of life for young people
by fostering positive social interactions and community involvement.
"The Community Youth Network provides support for youth so they will
be happy, healthy young people who are able to make a positive
contribution to our province," said the Honourable Susan Sullivan,
Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "Here, youth will
participate in fun and safe social events, learn how to pursue
meaningful career opportunities, and become engaged in local issues so
that they can understand the value of taking leading roles in their
communities."
"I am extremely pleased that the CYN in Clarenville is now officially
open, providing much needed service to the youth of this region," said
the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Business and MHA for Trinity
North. "I believe that one of the best ways to address challenges faced
by many 12 to 18 year olds is to provide them with a healthy environment
where they can broaden their horizons, develop strong relationships with
peers, and become leaders within their communities. The new Clarenville
CYN provides that environment."
The CYN had its origins in Budget 2008, when the Provincial
Government provided an additional $530,000 in order to further develop
the Community Youth Network throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Since
2003, the total investment in CYNs throughout the province totals $17
million. Once all the new sites are operational, the Community Youth
Network will comprise 41 locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador
aimed at serving thousands of young people between the ages of 12 to 18
on a daily basis.
