Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Newfoundland received $105,000
from the Provincial Government today to support the organization's
2010-11 operations. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human
Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Youth
Engagement, presented a cheque at the organization's provincial
headquarters in St. John's.
"Big Brothers Big Sisters is a tremendous organization that has made
a difference in the lives of countless young people by providing a
friend and mentor when needed," said Minister Sullivan. "Our government
has been a proud supporter of the efforts of this organization in the
past. We've provided $315,000 in funding over the last three years and
we look forward to this further commitment providing another great year
of successful program delivery."
Dedicated to the healthy development of young people, Big Brothers
Big Sisters has been serving Newfoundland and Labrador youth since 1975.
During that time, the organization has successfully matched thousands of
children with adult role models. The organization is currently engaged
in a "1 Year 100 Men" recruitment campaign to address the growing need
for Big Brother volunteers.
"We are truly grateful to the Provincial Government for its ongoing
support," said Kelly Leach, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Eastern Newfoundland. "At present we are facing tremendous
demand on our programs. For example, the average wait time for boys to
be matched with a Big Brother can be 12-14 months. This funding
commitment from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, combined
with more volunteers from our new recruitment campaign, will help ensure
more young people in our province can benefit."
"I'm delighted to see such a valued organization receive renewed
funding," said Sheila Osborne, MHA for St. John's West. "I hope today's
announcement encourages more organizations and members of the public to
support Big Brothers Big Sisters, an organization that certainly
continues to enhance the lives of so many of our youth."
The funding announced today comes under the Grants to Youth
Organizations Program, which is available to youth-serving organizations
that engage young people in areas of self-reliance, leadership and
citizenship development.
This year, the Provincial Government has invested a total of $751,540
from the program to assist 31 organizations, which include the Scout and
Girl Guide movements in the province, provincial Boys and Girls Clubs,
and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program.
