Supports Women Entrepreneurs in Newfoundland and Labrador
Continuing its commitment to entrepreneurship, the Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador will invest $532,888
in the
Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE),
under the Self-Employment Assistance program.
"The Provincial Government is fully committed to working with female
entrepreneurs to help them realize their full potential,"
said
the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and
Employment. "Through the Self-Employment Assistance program, we will
help women throughout the province develop their business ideas, provide
support in the first year of business operation, and
remove barriers to ensure they can fully participate in our growing
business sectors."
The Self-Employment Assistance program (SEA) is an employment program
that provides financial and entrepreneurial assistance to eligible
individuals aimed at helping themselves through starting a business.
"There should be no barriers to women in our province who want to
follow their entrepreneurial ambitions," said
the Honourable
Kathy Dunderdale, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
"Our government recognizes the many ways women contribute to and
strengthen the economy. Supporting women entrepreneurs will offer
tremendous employment potential as we continue to invest in job
opportunities, including emerging resource-based industries and training
for the skilled trades."
"NLOWE helps women in Newfoundland and Labrador stand out in the
entrepreneurial world by providing its clients and members with access
to funding as well as opportunities for networking, mentoring and
professional development," said Nena Abundo, NLOWE Executive Director.
"The Self-Employment Assistance program is a valuable tool for NLOWE as
we work with women to help them start successful and sustainable
businesses. We are grateful for the continued support of the Government
of Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as its ongoing commitment to NLOWE
and women in business."
NLOWE has been working with women who are starting or growing
businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador for more than 12 years. Since
1997, it has assisted more than 6,000 clients start more than 800 new
businesses, and created over 1,700 new employment positions throughout
the province.
The Self-Employment Assistance program is delivered by the Department
of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. In 2009-10, over $4.2 million
in funding was delivered under the program.
