Tender Announced for Further Work on
New Labrador West Health Care Facility

A new health care centre in Labrador West will provide residents with improved access to health care services in their community. The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services, announced today the tender for the major phase of construction for the centre, to be located in Labrador City.

"The Williams Government is making significant investments this year in health care infrastructure throughout the province," said Minister Kennedy. "This new facility in Labrador West will replace the existing Captain William Jackman Hospital and will offer a full array of services including acute and long-term care as well as diagnostic, laboratory and community services."

The tender is for the construction of a new two-storey, 10,312 square metre, 28-bed acute and long-term care facility. Site development, foundations and structural steel work are complete. Over $9 million has already been invested in the project. The tender for this project is expected to be awarded this winter, with construction expected to begin in the spring of 2011, and occupancy expected in 2014.

"Today's announcement is a major step forward in the construction of a new health care centre for Labrador West and will result in a significant economic boost to the area," said the Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Labrador Affairs. "Improved access to primary health care services is an objective of the Northern Strategic Plan and the completion of this facility will go a long way to achieve this in Labrador West."

"I am thrilled to see this tender for this phase of construction of our regional health care facility being issued as scheduled following the great progress this current season on the foundation and steel phase," said Jim Baker, MHA for Labrador West. "This is evidence once again of our government's unwavering commitment to the health care needs of the residents of Labrador West."

"We are very pleased to see this project moving to the next phase," said Boyd Rowe, CEO, Labrador-Grenfell Health. "We look forward with anticipation to working with the Provincial Government to bring the new facility in Labrador West to completion."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provided an investment of $208.9 million for health care infrastructure throughout the province, including investments in new construction, redevelopment of existing facilities, purchase of new medical equipment and repairs and maintenance.
