Medical Clinic to Receive Funding
The Nurse Abernathy Health Centre in Trepassey is the
latest facility to benefit from Provincial Government funding. The
clinic will receive approximately $163,000 for the purchase of capital
equipment, repairs and renovations this year. The Honourable Jerome
Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined for the
announcement today by Keith Hutchings, MHA for Ferryland; Beverley
Clarke, Vice-President, Regional Children's and Women's Health, Mental
Health and Ethics, Eastern Health; and, Con Finlay, Mayor of Trepassey.
"Our government continues to make strategic
investments in health care equipment and infrastructure throughout
Newfoundland and Labrador in an effort to maintain a quality health care
system for residents," said Minister Kennedy. "By investing in this
health care facility, we are ensuring patients continue to have access
to the care they require while receiving an enhanced level of service."
Today's funding announcement includes $100,000 for
several repairs and upgrades to the facility such as the replacement of
windows, doors and siding, and interior painting. In addition,
approximately $55,000 will be invested for the replacement of the
ultrasound machine, and $8,000 for a new intravenous (IV) pump.
"I am quite pleased to work with the communities of
the Southern Avalon in ensuring that we continue to upgrade medical
facilities, particularly in our rural areas," said Keith Hutchings, MHA
for Ferryland. "The clinic in Trepassey is a valuable asset in service
delivery for the area, and I applaud the Williams Government's
commitment and recognition of this required investment."
A new x-ray system was also recently installed at the
Nurse Abernathy Health Centre through a Provincial Government investment
of $216,700 in Budget 2008. The new system is digital and uses the
Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), which is an
electronic system for acquiring, sorting, transporting, storing and
electronically developing medical images. This, along with funding for
other projects, brings the total Provincial Government investment in
this health care centre to almost $425,000 since 2003.
"We thank the Provincial Government for demonstrating
its commitment to quality health care services in our province," said
Beverley Clarke, Vice-President, Regional Children's and Women's Health,
Mental Health and Ethics, Eastern Health. "Upgrading our facilities and
investing in vital medical equipment will enhance the quality of care
for people in the area and ensure they have access to health care
services into the future."
Budget 2010: The Right Investments - For Our
Children and Our Future provided an investment of $208.9 million for
health care infrastructure throughout the province, including
investments in new construction; redevelopment of existing facilities;
purchase of new medical equipment; and, repairs and maintenance.
