Call for Applications for Provincial
Wellness Grants Funding
Funding applications for the 2010 Provincial
Wellness Grants program are now being accepted. The program provides
support to volunteer, community-based groups and organizations to
enhance wellness initiatives in communities throughout the province.
Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future
includes $500,000 to support this program.
"Since 2005, our government has invested
almost $2.8 million to support 122 community-based wellness programs
throughout the province," said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister
of Health and Community Services. "Through continued investments, we are
committed to working with groups in Newfoundland and Labrador to promote
healthy, active lifestyles and overall well-being, and to encourage
residents throughout our province to take action on wellness."
The Provincial Wellness Grants program is a
key component of the Provincial Wellness Plan, which focuses on health
promotion and strengthening community action towards wellness
priorities. These grants support projects with an emphasis on healthy
eating, physical activity, tobacco control and child and youth
development, as well as a number of other wellness priorities.
Proposals for Provincial Wellness Grants must
focus on building community capacity for wellness; involve strong
partnerships among community organizations; and, include plans on how to
sustain the project after the funding period. Applicants must be
not-for-profit, community-based organizations in Newfoundland and
Labrador working on one or more of the wellness priority areas. In
addition, provincial organization applicants must demonstrate how they
plan to deliver their project province-wide to be considered for
funding. Grants awarded will range from $5,000 to $50,000.
"This program provides necessary funding
required by organizations to begin or enhance initiatives supporting
wellness," said Minister Kennedy. "It's a great opportunity to work in
partnership with communities to improve the overall health and
well-being of residents in the province."
A copy of the application form can be obtained
by visiting
www.gov.nl.ca/health or by calling 729-7443. The deadline for
applications is October 22, 2010. Proposals will be reviewed at the
regional and provincial level, and funding will be awarded based on the
consolidation of reviews and recommendations made to the minister.
The Provincial Government invests $4.1 million
annually in the Provincial Wellness Plan, which promotes eight wellness
priorities, including healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco
control, injury prevention, mental health promotion, environmental
health, child and youth development, and health protection.
