Age-Friendly Grant
Awarded to Holyrood
The Town of Holyrood is the latest
beneficiary of the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador (AFNL) Grants
program with the award of $10,000 to the community. The grants program
is an initiative which supports municipalities, Inuit community
governments, reserves and seniors' organizations throughout the province
with creating age-friendly communities.
"An age-friendly community is one where
the physical and social environment are designed to support and enable
people to live in a secure environment, enjoy health, and continue to
participate fully in society," said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy,
Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for
Aging and Seniors. "Our grants help communities and organizations
throughout the province focus on seniors and the important role they
play in society."
The AFNL Grant will support the Town of
Holyrood in becoming a more age-friendly community. The town will engage
in activities that include forming an age-friendly committee or team;
evaluating community resources and assets; identifying community
champions; determining challenges and opportunities; and, creating an
action plan.
"Investments in age-friendly and seniors
programs are always welcome," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, MHA for
Harbour Main. "With an aging demographic it is important to continue to
address these needs today, so that we can put in place the necessary
supports for this community and its residents."
Overall, the Williams Government will
invest $200,000 in the AFNL Grants program. The grants will serve, in
part, to fulfill commitments made under the Provincial Healthy Aging
Policy Framework, through which the Provincial Government invested an
additional $3.5 million in the 2009-10 fiscal year toward improving the
wellness of residents.
