Aging Research Projects Receive Funding
A new slate of research projects that focus on
aging and seniors are being funded through the Newfoundland and Labrador Healthy
Aging Research Program, which was established under the Provincial Healthy Aging
Framework. Over $200,000 in research grants will be awarded to fund several
projects on a variety of topics including multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and
neurological disorders.
"This is the second year of a three-year commitment by our government to fund
this program, and I am pleased to offer these awards to another capable group of
researchers and students," said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of
Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors. "I
expect that the results of their work will contribute to our knowledge base and
help us develop effective policies that can contribute to the health of our
aging population."
This year's award recipients fall into five categories: Post-Doctoral
Fellowship; Master's Research Grant; Seed Grant; Faculty Course Buyout Grant;
and, Project Grant.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Healthy Aging Research Program is administered by
the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research (NLCAHR), on
behalf of the Department of Health and Community Services. The program aims to
generate new knowledge that will contribute to the healthy aging of the
province's population. It provides the research community with incentives and
opportunities to focus attention on research questions related to healthy aging.
A new call for research grant proposals will be issued in June 2010. Full
details on this program are available on the NLCAHR website,
www.nlcahr.mun.ca/funding/aging,
or by contacting program coordinator Tyrone White at 777-7973.
The awards to date have funded researchers from a broad range of disciplines
including the fields of medicine, sociology, human kinetics and recreation,
nursing and psychology.
