Customers Advised to
Learn More about Refund Policies
This Christmas season, shoppers are
reminded that while they are searching for the perfect gift and great
deal, they also need to ask store employees about refund policies. The
Consumer Affairs Division of the Department of Government Services
receives many inquiries about refund policies every holiday season when
consumers find out it may not be so easy to return an item.
"Return policies vary from store to store
with some stores having a no refund policy and only offering store
credit or exchange," said the Honourable Harry Harding, Minister of
Government Services. "To avoid disappointment, consumers would be wise
to ask about those policies before they buy an item. I would also
recommend that before buying anything, consumers should ensure it is in
good condition and working properly."
Common refund options include money back
guarantees which usually have certain restrictions such as proof of
purchase, time limits and returning the item in the original packaging.
Some stores offer exchanges or credit notes only and other stores, in
particular specialty shops, may have a "no refund" policy. These are all
options that consumers should become familiar with in case they are not
satisfied with the product. Also, it is important to keep all Christmas
receipts in a safe and easy-to-remember location in case a purchase
needs to be returned.
Consumers should also keep in mind that
gifts purchased at full price which are later discounted may only be
refunded at the discount price, if the consumer no longer has a receipt.
As well, consumers should be aware of any signage in the store which
indicates that sales may be final.
For consumers who prefer online shopping,
they should make sure that the website they are visiting is secure and
has protection for online payments. Consumers should look for the URL
beginning with https rather than http and the lock icon in the lower
right hand corner of their browser. It is important to also read the
fine print for online refund policies.
Consumers who are unsure of their rights
should contact the Consumer Affairs Division at 709-729-2599 or
toll-free at 1-877-968-2600.
