The Department of Government Services announced today
that Wabush Mines has been charged with alleged violations of the
Occupational Health and Safety Act in relation to an accident that
occurred in June 2008.
One worker received injuries when an attachment on a
dryer feeder that was being lifted tore away, causing the equipment and
hoist to fall. The charges are the result of an investigation by the
Occupational Health and Safety Branch.
The company has been charged with five violations
under the Occupational Health and Safety Act which relate
generally to its failure as an employer. These violations are for not
using the hoist according to manufacturer's instructions and the
Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, not ensuring equipment used
was capable of safely performing its function, not ensuring equipment
was being maintained in a safe condition, and not providing the
information and training necessary to ensure the safety of workers.
The first appearance for the company is scheduled for
July 20, 2010, at Provincial Court in Wabush.
