St. John's Company Faces OHS Charges in Provincial Court

The Department of Government Services announced today that M & M Engineering Limited has been charged with violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations in relation to an incident that occurred in March 2008.

The incident occurred at the National Research Council building at Memorial University in St. John's. Workers were installing a metal catwalk when one worker fell approximately 23 feet to the floor which resulted in the worker suffering a broken femur. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch.

The company has been charged with two violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations which relate to its failure as an employer to provide a safe workplace and to ensure that holes in walkways or work areas are securely covered and identified.

The second appearance was April 23 at Provincial Court in St. John's. The third appearance is scheduled for May 27, 2010.
