Nominations Called for URock Volunteer Awards

It is time to tell young volunteers, "you rock!" The Honourable Dave Denine, Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit Sector, today opened the nomination process for the 2011 URock Volunteer Awards.

"Our provinces young people are having a major impact on our province, the country and around the world," said Minister Denine. "We need to honour their contributions and say thank you for their selfless and tireless work. Young people are getting involved in creative and innovative ways and we want to bring attention to their remarkable accomplishments."

Nominations for the URock Volunteer Award can be made in two categories: individuals and youth-led non-profit organizations or groups. Individual nominees must have made outstanding voluntary contributions, be 30 years of age or under and a current or past resident of Newfoundland and Labrador. Non-profit organizations or groups nominated must have made an outstanding contribution for the betterment of others. One substantial change to last years criteria is that members of municipal councils now qualify for the award. There are many young people who volunteer their time to serve on municipal councils in the province.

A copy of the guidelines and nomination form can be obtained by visiting www.urockvolunteerawards.ca or by calling 1-877-895-8891. The deadline to submit nominations is February 7, 2010. The URock Awards show will take place in the spring to announce and honour the award recipients.

Last years awards show featured music from eight local artists who put off an amazing rock show and each recipient was presented with a customized electric guitar. The recipients of last years URock Volunteer Award were Allied Youth of Newfoundland and Labrador, Andrea Andersen of Makkovik, Kayla Carroll of St. Lunaire-Griquet, Emily Elliott of St. Johns, Maggie Hynes of Dunville, Kristina Roche of Torbay, William Short of Marystown, and Kendra Warford of Point Leamington.

"I am asking everyone to take the time to nominate a deserving volunteer or organization that has played a significant role in making our communities healthier and happier places to live," said Minister Denine. "These awards are an opportunity to show them that they have made a positive impact through volunteering and encourage other young people to get involved in their community. Show a young person or organization they rock by nominating them for this great honour."
