Head of Provincial Public Service to Retire

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that Gary Norris, Clerk of the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet, is retiring from the position December 3. Mr. Norris has accepted the position of Fellow of the James G. Channing Chair in Public Administration at Memorial University.

Gary Norris has been an exemplary Provincial Government employee for 33 years and has contributed significantly to the advancement of public policy, said Premier Williams. I thank him sincerely for his dedication and contributions. In particular, I extend to him appreciation for the leadership he demonstrated during his three and a half years as Clerk of the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet. As the provinces most senior civil servant, he brought to the position both a fresh perspective and the benefit of his years of executive experience in other departments. I wish him well in his new role.

Mr. Norris has been employed with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador since 1977 after graduating from Memorial University. Prior to being appointed Clerk of the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet in May 2007, he was Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. His earlier positions included Deputy Minister, Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat, and senior positions with the Executive Council and Environment and Labour. He has also worked with Treasury Board and Finance.
