Head of Provincial
Public Service to Retire
The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of
Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that Gary Norris, Clerk of
the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet, is retiring from the
position December 3. Mr. Norris has accepted the position of Fellow of
the James G. Channing Chair in Public Administration at Memorial
University.
�Gary Norris has been an exemplary
Provincial Government employee for 33 years and has contributed
significantly to the advancement of public policy,� said Premier
Williams. �I thank him sincerely for his dedication and contributions.
In particular, I extend to him appreciation for the leadership he
demonstrated during his three and a half years as Clerk of the Executive
Council and Secretary to Cabinet. As the province�s most senior civil
servant, he brought to the position both a fresh perspective and the
benefit of his years of executive experience in other departments. I
wish him well in his new role.�
Mr. Norris has been employed with the
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador since 1977 after graduating from
Memorial University. Prior to being appointed Clerk of the Executive
Council and Secretary to Cabinet in May 2007, he was Deputy Minister of
Tourism, Culture and Recreation. His earlier positions included Deputy
Minister, Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat, and senior positions
with the Executive Council and Environment and Labour. He has also
worked with Treasury Board and Finance. Mr. Norris also previously
served on the boards of directors for the Atlantic Lottery Corporation,
the Rooms Corporation, and Marble Mountain Development Corporation.
