Premier Announces Date for By-Election
in District of Conception Bay East - Bell Island

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that a by-election will be held Thursday, December 2, 2010 in the District of Conception Bay East - Bell Island.

"It is with mixed emotions that we announce the upcoming by-election for the District of Conception Bay East - Bell Island," said Premier Williams. "While I am pleased the seat will be filled in this important district, it is also a reminder of the great loss to our province in the recent passing of a remarkable politician and woman, Dianne Whalen."

The Williams Government amended the House of Assembly Act in 2004 to ensure by-elections are announced within 60 days and conducted within 90 days of vacancy.

"Our government remains committed to ensuring that we do not have prolonged periods of vacancy in the House of Assembly, as there is nothing more important in a democracy than elected representation," added Premier Williams. "I look forward to an energetic campaign, and encourage all residents in the district to exercise their democratic right to vote on December 2."
