Premier Calls Vale and Union Together for Last Effort at Strike Settlement

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today called upon Vale Newfoundland and Labrador Limited and the United Steelworkers Local 9508 to make one final effort to resolve outstanding issues in the ongoing strike. The hope is to achieve bargained resolution prior to the commencement of an Industrial Inquiry.

Premier Williams called the two sides to convene a meeting at the Confederation Building. The meeting will take place at 5:00 p.m. today (Friday, October 22), at the Collective Bargaining Boardroom, East Block. Premier Williams will meet briefly with both sides along with government-appointed independent mediator Bill Wells; and will then leave the groups to the collective bargaining process.

If there is no resolution, the Industrial Inquiry will commence immediately. On October 19, 2010, the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for the Labour Relations Agency, announced the appointment of John F. Roil, Q.C., as Inquiry Chairperson, and Randell Earle, Q.C., and Brian R. Gatien as Inquiry Members, effective the end of business day Friday, October 22, should the parties not reach an agreement.
