Community Groups Unite
to Focus on Sexual Violence Awareness
The Provincial Government and community groups are coming together to
promote awareness and education during Sexual Violence Awareness Week
2010 from September 13 to 17.
"Sexual violence knows no boundaries and can affect individuals,
families and communities for generations," said the Honourable Kathy
Dunderdale, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and lead
minister for the Violence Prevention Initiative. "Sexual Violence
Awareness Week is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about the
realities of sexual violence. The theme for this year, CommUNITY +
Awareness = Change, reflects the route which can end sexual
violence."
The Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention
Centre is one of over 30 community groups that partner with the
Provincial Government through its Violence Prevention Initiative, a
six-year strategy to reduce violence in Newfoundland and Labrador. The
centre provides support and essential services to victims of sexual
violence and has a 24-hour crisis line (1-800-726-2743) that is
available province-wide.
"At the Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre, we value our
relationship with our partners," said co-ordinator Barbara Wadman. "Our
centre is under constant demand as a resource for those who are dealing
with the pervasive effects that result from sexual violence. By taking
part in Sexual Violence Awareness Week activities, you are helping to
create awareness about the issue and spread the word to help make this
province violence free. Together, we can continue to make a difference."
There are a number of events scheduled throughout the week by the
centre, including an open house, public information session and a free
self-defense class. The week culminates on Friday evening with the
annual Take Back the Night March and rally on the steps of St. John's
City Hall. For more information, call 709-747-7757.
In recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Week, flags have been
lowered to half staff at Confederation Building for today (Monday,
September 13).
"Through the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers of
the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention
Centre and other community and government anti-violence partners, we are
taking important steps toward ending sexual violence in this province,"
said Minister Dunderdale.
