New Child and Youth Advocate Named

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the appointment of Carol A. Chafe as Child and Youth Advocate, effective September 27.

"The Child and Youth Advocate provides an important leadership role as an advocate of the rights and interests of children and youth," said Premier Williams. "I wish Ms. Chafe well in her challenging new role. I am confident her strong experience and abilities will serve her well in her new position."

The appointment is subject to the approval of the House of Assembly, as per Section 4 of the Child and Youth Advocate Act. Until then, Ms. Chafe will exercise the full powers of the Child and Youth Advocate.

Until Ms. Chafe assumes the position, John Rorke will continue as acting Child and Youth Advocate.

"I also extend a sincere thank you to Mr. Rorke who has been serving as acting Child and Youth Advocate for the past year," said Premier Williams.

BIOGRAPHY

Carol A. Chafe
Carol A. Chafe has 20 years of progressive management experience, with the last 13 years
in senior management roles. The most recent was that of Regional Director, Children's and Women's Health Program, Eastern Health Authority since April 2010;  prior to that she was Program Director of Children's and Women's Health Program, Eastern Health Authority, since July 2005. Previous senior management positions included Associate Program Director of the Children's and Women's Health Program for more than three years with the then Health Care Corporation of St. John's and Program Director of Women's Health Program since 1997. Her earlier positions included Program Division Manager ( Medicine Program) with the Health Care Corporation of St. John's. Ms. Chafe was also Nurse Manager at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital for six years and staff nurse at that hospital for 12 years.

Ms. Chafe has a Master of Employment Relations from Memorial University. She has a Bachelor of Nursing from Memorial University and a Registered Nurse diploma from St. Clare's School of Nursing. She also completed a two-year Health Services Management program, a one-year certificate in Departmental Management and a one-year certificate in Unit Administration from the Canadian Healthcare Association.
