Senior Appointments Announced

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced two senior appointments.

Peter W. Au, C.A., has been appointed Assistant Deputy Minister (Strategic Industries and Business Development) with the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. Mr. Au brings to the position extensive management experience with the private sector.

Philip J. McCarthy has been appointed Assistant Deputy Minister (Special Projects — Biofuels Strategy) with the Department of Natural Resources. Mr. McCarthy served most recently as Assistant Deputy Minister (Strategic Industries and Business Development), Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development.

"I am pleased to welcome Mr. Au to the provincial public service. I wish him and Mr. McCarthy continued success, and I look forward to their contributions in their new roles," said Premier Williams.

Both appointments are effective June 22.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Peter W. Au, C.A.
Peter W. Au, C.A. has extensive management experience in the private sector, including the past 10 years as Management Consultant providing a broad range of accounting, auditing, tax and consulting assignments for clients in all business sectors, and providing advice on budgeting, performance evaluations, cost management, asset management, human resource planning, and cash-flow analysis and management. From 1989 to 2000 he held Senior Vice President and other senior management positions with The Johnson Group of Companies in St. John's. From 1975 to 1989 he held positions with the chartered accounting firm Ernst and Young.

Mr. Au has a Bachelor of Science from Memorial University, is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, and has completed the institute's advanced programs in business valuation, in-depth taxation, corporate reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, estate and tax planning, and U.S. taxation.

Philip J. McCarthy
Philip J. McCarthy has been with the Provincial Government since 1977. For the past nine years he served as Assistant Deputy Minister (Strategic Industries and Business Development) with the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. He earlier served as Assistant Deputy Minister (Government Services) with the Department of Government Services and Lands. His other positions include: Senior Economic Policy Officer with Cabinet Secretariat of the Executive Council; Director of Special Projects with the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods/Department of Fisheries, Food and Agriculture; and Director of Production and Marketing, Department of Rural, Agricultural and Northern Development/Department of Forestry and Agriculture.

Mr. McCarthy has a Bachelor of Science (computer science) degree from Memorial University and a Bachelor of Science degree (mathematics) from the University of Prince Edward Island.
