Express Condolences on Passing of Former Chief Justice
The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of
Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of
Justice and Attorney General, today expressed sympathy to the family and
friends of former Chief Justice Arthur Samuel Mifflin who passed away
April 16.
"Chief Justice Mifflin provided over 30
years of dedicated service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador as
a member of the Supreme Court as well as a Member of the House of
Assembly for the District of Trinity North," said Premier Williams. "His
contributions to the law of our province through both the courts and the
legislature are still evident today. He was highly respected and his
legacy is a strong one in our province. On behalf of the Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador, I offer the family and friends of Chief
Justice Mifflin our deepest sympathies."
"The duties of Chief Justice are of great
importance to the functioning of the judicial system in Newfoundland and
Labrador and Chief Justice Mifflin provided exemplary service in this
capacity," said Minister Collins. "He was widely respected not only in
the legal community, but throughout the entire province for his
dedication. He truly will be missed."
Chief Justice Mifflin was educated at
Memorial University College, King's College and Dalhousie University. He
was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in 1947 and worked in private
practice. He served as Member of the House of Assembly for Trinity North
from 1956 to 1962 and was appointed to the Supreme Court, Trial Division
in 1964. He served as Chief Justice of the Trial Division from 1975
until 1979 when he was appointed Chief Justice of Newfoundland. Upon
retirement in 1986 he served as a supernumerary judge until June 19,
1995.
