Nomination Deadline Approaching for URock Volunteer Awards

In just two weeks, the nomination period for the URock Volunteer Awards will close. The Honourable Dave Denine, Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit Sector, today reminded the public to nominate individuals and organizations for the awards by Monday, March 15. The unique URock Volunteer Awards will recognize the contributions of young volunteers and organizations with a connection to young people.

"The deadline for nominations is fast approaching and I am encouraging everyone to nominate an individual or organization in the voluntary and non-profit sector who has done outstanding work for your community," said Minister Denine. "This award is meant to show young volunteers that they are the rock of our communities, they have a positive impact and make great things happen. It simply tells them, "You Rock!""

The URock Awards show will take place in the spring to honour the award recipients and celebrate their contributions. The gala event will be hosted by local actor and comedian Jonny Harris and will feature performances from some of the province's top musical acts. Each award recipient will be presented with a customized piece of artwork but exactly what that award will be is being kept a secret.

"The awards show is going to be an exciting night for those being honoured, as well as those attending," said Minister Denine. "We hope Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will be there to congratulate these deserving award winners and recognize the hard work and dedication they have given to their communities."

Nominations can be made in two categories: individuals and organizations or non-profit groups. Individual nominees must have made outstanding voluntary contributions, be 30 years of age or under and a current or past resident of Newfoundland and Labrador. Organizations or non-profit groups nominated must be led by young people or have made an outstanding contribution for the betterment of youth.

Minister Denine launched the awards on January 29 at The University Centre, Memorial University. The news release issued can be found at www.gov.nl.ca/releases/2010/exec/0129n07.htm, and a video of the launch can be viewed at www.urockvolunteerawards.ca.
