"You Rock!" - New Awards Program to Recognize Young Volunteers

A unique awards program was launched today by the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit Sector. The URock Volunteer Awards will recognize the contributions of young volunteers and organizations with a connection to young people.

"The contribution young people from this province make in their communities and around the world is outstanding," said Minister Denine. "As an aging population, we are increasingly looking to our young people to get involved in organizations that provide important services and resources to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. We want to give these young volunteers the recognition they deserve and encourage other young people to explore opportunities to volunteer."

Nominations can be made in two categories: individuals and organizations or non-profits. Individual nominees must have made outstanding voluntary contributions, be 30 years of age or under and a current or past resident of Newfoundland and Labrador. Organizations or non-profit groups nominated must be led by young people or have made an outstanding contribution for the betterment of youth.

A copy of the guidelines and nomination form can be obtained by visiting www.urockvolunteerawards.ca or by calling 1-877-895-8891. The deadline to submit nominations is March 15, 2010. The URock Awards show will take place in the spring to announce and honour the award recipients.

The minister was joined at the launch by Zaren Healey White, Co-ordinator of the Student Volunteer Bureau at Memorial University, who acted as emcee for the event; and Chris Sheppard and Chelsey Laird who spoke of their volunteer experiences. Those attending the launch were also treated to a preview of the upcoming URock awards show with a performance from St. John's singer-songwriter Ian Foster.

"I am asking everyone to take the time to nominate a deserving volunteer or organization that has made a significant difference in your community," said Minister Denine. "These awards are an opportunity to show them that their volunteering is worthwhile and that they have made a positive impact. Recognize an individual or organization for their valuable contribution and say you rock!"
