Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Snook�s Arm Area, Nugget Pond Gold Mine, Crown Pillar                         (Reg. 1549)
Proponent: Rambler Metals and Mining Ltd.

Rambler Metals and Mining Canada Ltd. proposes to mine the crown pillar of the historic Nugget Pond Gold Mine.  A total of 24,000 tonnes of waste rock material will be removed by surface extraction to access 8,100 tonnes of ore.  Mining will involve drilling/blasting and mined material will be trucked to the nearby Nugget Pond Milling facility, approximately 150 metres away.  All mining activities will be conducted within a brownfield site for a duration of approximately 45 days.

The undertaking was registered on December 20, 2010; the deadline for public comments is January 26, 2011; and the minister�s decision is due by February 3, 2011. 

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Twillingate Shrimp Shell Waste                                                              (Reg. 1534)
Proponent: Eastern Star Group Canada Ltd.

The Minister of Environment and Conservation, following review of comments from the public and government departments/agencies, has determined that the additional information and subsequent presentation at a public meeting is considered satisfactory and the project is released from further environmental assessment, subject to the following condition:

  • The facility shall be designed and operated in accordance with all commitments outlined and detailed in the original registration document and additional information.  These commitments include, but are not restricted to, the following:
    • Provisions to mitigate any leakage, spillage or odours that may result from raw material transport, storage and disposal;
    • Installation of a waterfall treatment system and charcoal filters to control air emissions;
    • Installation of effluent filtration equipment for the removal of solids prior to discharge; and,
    • Proper maintenance of all pollution control equipment so as to ensure their operation in an effective manner.
