Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Crown Districts 17 and 18 Five Year Operating Plan (2008-2012) Amendment
Proponent: Department of Natural Resources (Reg. 1541)

The timber harvesting amendment to the existing Five Year Operating Plan will open an area for domestic harvesting near the community of Raleigh on the Great Northern Peninsula. The Raleigh Domestic Cutting Block (D18-01) borders on the northeast end of the Raleigh Municipal Boundary and covers an area of 105 hectares of productive forest land, providing access to an additional 3,312 cubic metres of timber. The timber will be harvested by domestic cutters for fuelwood and sawlogs. Harvesting activities will commence in the winter of 2011.

The undertaking was registered on November 2, 2010; the deadline for public comments is December 9, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by December 17, 2010.

Holyrood Access Road Sand/Gravel Quarry
Proponent: Black Ridge Construction Ltd. (Reg. 1540)

The proposal involves a four hectare quarry expansion off the Holyrood Access Road, approximately 3.3 kilometres from the Town of Holyrood. No new roads will be required for access to the site. A 50 metre buffer will be maintained around all bodies of water in the area. Associated work will employ two people during construction/site preparation and five people during operations. The life expectancy of the quarry is five to eight years.

The undertaking was registered on October 29, 2010; the deadline for public comments is December 9, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by December 13, 2010.
