Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Twillingate Shrimp Shell Waste Processing                                                          (Reg.1534)
Proponent: Eastern Star Group Canada Ltd.

The proponent plans to obtain shrimp shell waste material from seafood processing plants in the Twillingate area to extract the protein for use in aquaculture feed and dry the remaining shells for shipping to markets in China. The process involves removing the water content using very high pressure and through a centrifuge process removing the protein component. This protein component will be frozen and sold to aquaculture feed producers. The remaining semi-dried shells will undergo further drying in a large oil-fired drum dryer. This dried product will then be compressed, wrapped and containerized for shipping on a weekly basis. The proposed facility will be constructed on a site currently owned by the Twillingate Harbour Authority located across the harbour from the Notre Dame Seafoods processing plant. Shrimp shell waste material will be off-loaded into large fish boxes and trucked to the Eastern Star Group processing plant.

The undertaking was registered October 12, 2010; public comments are due by November 17, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by November 26, 2010.

Gambo Pond Cottage Access Road Extension                                                      (Reg. 1533) Proponent: Edward J. Moss

The proponent proposes to build an extension to the cottage access road on Gambo Pond, Bonavista Bay. The cottage access road extension will be 560 metres long and will be located on the northwestern side of Gambo Pond. The extension will connect to the already constructed road on Gambo Pond and will start approximately 4.5 kilometres southwest of the outflow of Mint Brook. The extension to the road is requested to provide easier access to an existing cottage. Construction is proposed to begin in the spring of 2011.
