The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister
of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events
relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental
Protection Act.
UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
Rock Cliffe Construction Huguette Lake
Quarry (Reg. 1531)
Proponent: Rock Cliffe Construction Inc.
The proponent intends to operate a sand
and gravel quarry near Labrador City, approximately 2.1 km northwest of
the Trans Labrador Highway and 450 metres south of Huguette Lake. The
operation will be approximately 2.5 hectares in size and will be
developed adjacent to existing quarries in the area. Aggregate material
will be crushed and screened at the site. Aggregate washing may also
take place. No new access roads are required. The quarry will be used to
supply aggregate material as needed in the Labrador City area and is
expected to be in operation for approximately 10 weeks upon receipt of
approval. Trucking processed aggregate from the site will occur over a
longer period.
The undertaking was registered on
September 9, 2010; the deadline for public comments is October 14, 2010;
and the minister's decision is due by October 24, 2010.
Burin Peninsula Regional Waste Management
System and Facilities (Reg.1530)
Proponent: Burin Peninsula Waste Management Corporation
The proponent proposes to construct a
Regional Waste Management Facility (RWMF) in the vicinity of the current
Frenchman's Cove dumpsite, which is situated on Route 220 approximately
0.7 kilometres northeast of the intersection of Route 213 and Route 220
on the Burin Peninsula. The 136 hectare site can be accessed by an
existing road off Route 220. The RWMF will consist of an administration
building; weigh scale and scale house; metals storage; transfer station;
household hazardous waste storage building; public drop-off area;
construction and demolition waste storage; composting facility; and
maintenance garage. Construction of the facility is scheduled to start
in 2011, with operations expected to begin in late 2012 or early 2013.
The undertaking was registered on
September 9, 2010; public comments are due by October 14, 2010; and the
minister's decision is due by October 24, 2010.
