June 30, 2010Funding Announced for Burin Peninsula
Waste Management Initiatives
The Burin Peninsula Waste Management Corporation received support
today of $375,000 to assist with the continued development and
implementation of waste management plans for the region. The funds are
being provided over a three-year period and come from the Newfoundland
and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund administered by the
Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB).
"The trust fund supports regional progressive waste management practices
in Newfoundland and Labrador and, in doing so, plays an important role
in ensuring the environmental sustainability of our province," said the
Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation.
"The Burin Peninsula Waste Management Corporation will utilize this
funding to maintain momentum in the development and implementation of
their waste management plans."
The schedule for advancing the Provincial Solid Waste Management
Strategy calls for full province-wide modern waste management by 2020.
"The regional authorities are diligently working to keep plans moving
forward ensuring that key milestones are met along the way towards full
implementation of the provincial strategy," said the Honourable Dianne
Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "I am very pleased to see the
strategy advancing in this area of the province."
MMSB supports the implementation of the Provincial Solid Waste
Management Strategy by providing funds to the regional committees so
they can undertake research and develop long-term, sustainable plans for
a more environmentally responsible and progressive waste management
system throughout their region of the province. This new system will see
the introduction of recycling programs and other important waste
diversion initiatives throughout the region.
"Continuing to work with the regional waste management committees, such
as the one on the Burin Peninsula, is extremely important to the waste
management process," said Leigh Puddester, MMSB Chair and Chief
Executive Officer. "Our continued support is necessary if we are to
successfully meet our long-term objectives, ultimately ensuring a clean
and healthy environment throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."
The Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy identified a regional
approach as the most cost-effective and environmentally-responsible
means of addressing the province's waste management needs over the
long-term, especially in rural areas.
Cyril Dodge, Chair of the Burin Peninsula Waste Management Corporation,
is appreciative of the funding and the continued support by MMSB, the
Department of Municipal Affairs, and the Department of Environment and
Conservation. "With these instrumental funds now in place, it is our aim
that within the next three years, we will have a regional facility in
operation, with all residents and businesses of the Burin Peninsula
following the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy."
MMSB is a provincial Crown agency that reports to the Minister of
Environment and Conservation. Its mandate is to support progressive
waste management practices in the province, with a particular focus on
waste diversion, recycling and public education. The MMSB is also
responsible for providing start-up planning and organizational
development support to the 15 regional waste management authorities that
will enable them to implement modern waste management systems throughout
the province.
